ASL News Item (December 14, 2010): Chahine, Helou and Ziyadeh elected to the ASL

The ASL elected Dr. Moustafa Chahine of NASA-JPL, Dr. George Helou of Caltech and Professor Fuad Ziyadeh of the American University of Beirut as Full Members of the Lebanese Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Moustafa Chahine was elected to the ASL on June 26, 2010 "For his leadership in the theoretical modeling and space observation of Earth and planetary atmospheres." At NASA-JPL Dr. Chahine has served as founding head of the Division of Earth and Space Sciences and as the Laboratory’s Chief Scientist until 2001. Dr. Chahine’s primary interests are in remote sensing of planetary atmospheres and surfaces, and in climate change processes.

Dr. George Helou was elected to the ASL on June 26, 2010 "For his leadership and contribution to infrared spectroscopy of galaxies and the Spitzer Infrared Astronomy Mission." He is the Executive Director of the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC), and a member of the faculty in the Physics, Math and Astronomy Division at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA. He is also Deputy Director of the Spitzer Science Center, and Director of the NASA Herschel Science Center.

Professor Fuad Ziyadeh was elected to the ASL on December 7, 2010 "For lifetime contribution to the understanding and treatment of the kidney disease in diabetes mellitus."
He is Professor of Medicine at the American University of Beirut and a distinguished international authority on the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy, the principal cause of kidney failure worldwide.
